Well Julia?

...and what happens when art offends the sensibilities of the public?
Answer: put it in an art gallery and call it an installation or, in the case of the refugees, send them to Christmas island etc.

What are the images of a paper shelter doing on the CPM blogpage?
After rescuing it from oblivion because it apparently looked untidy outside the pristine CPM, I thought it might still have some resonance with passers by who think they're living on the edge & for those who think that art and politics can live together. If you don't subscribe to this notion i'd suggest you bone up on your art history, read some of Neruda's poetry or take a long look at picasso's "Guernica".
Yes, it might look self-indulgent for an artist safe in his comfortable Australia to pretend he's on the 'cutting edge' of the public art scene but have you thought who's really on the 'edge'?
Have you thought why boat people exist now and in the seventies in Australia, when before then the last boat people we knew of came in 1788?
get used to it because these are the people really living on that fashionable and oh so daring 'edge' the trendy young artspeak-educated things refer to at their openings.
Globalization will be a source of fear & uncertainity to millions of us from now on because we 'don't want them in our backyard'. So we'll turn to our leaders for protection as the upROOTED knock on our reinforced doors.
"Intolerant demigogues in established democracies will demand tests-of knowledge, language, of attitude to determine whether desperate newcomers are deserving of an identity. In this brave new century we shall miss the tolerant, the marginals, the edge people." NY book Review Tony Judt.

The Edge Shelter will next be on view in St John's cathedral, Brisbane, in October. It will have the addition of a middle Eastern carpet inside, on the floor.
The exhibition is called B Aware and is organized by the 8GG
8GG@stpauls.qld.edu.au for anyone interested in taking part.
